Akhuwat Foundation Pakistan – Poverty free Society
Akhuwat is a trust that was initiated by Dr. Amjad Saqib. It is not just a religious obligation but also a social contract. It is basically a pact between privileged and underprivileged, a responsibility of those who have resources towards those who do not. The literal meaning of Akhuwat is ‘brotherhood’ and that is exactly what it is trying to serve. They started this organization back in 2001 when Dr. Saqib wanted to start a Micro finance program where the loans were in the form of Qarz-e-Hasna and the benevolent loans. He won the support of his friends by taking his idea to a small gathering. Their initial donation was 10,000 rupees from Mr. Saleem Ranjha and the undying support of Dr. Kamran Shams, Dr. Izhar Ul Haq and Mr. Humayon Ehsan, Akhuwat was formed. The first loan was given out to a woman. Akhuwat envisions to eliminate poverty by creating a bond of solidarity between the affluent and the marginalized. Their goal is to develop and sustain a social system based on mutual support. They extend a helping hand to the poor and underprivileged by providing interest-free loans so they can start a business and become self-reliable. Akhuwat is a non-profit company registered with the Securities & Exchange Commission of Pakistan under section 42.
